Das Sultanat Brunei (oder Brunei Darussalam, wie es amtlich heisst) ist eines der kleinsten Länder in Asien und in der Welt und trotzdem ist es dank Erdöl und Erdgas eines der reichsten. Die Nation wird von einem Sultan von der Hauptstadt Bandar Seri Begawan aus regiert. Eigentlich gibt es gar nicht so viel zu tun und zu sehen. Als islamisches Land sind neben dem Sultans Palast die Moscheen die herausragenden Gebäude. Die weiss glänzende Omar Ali Saifuddien Moschee hat einen eigenen künstlichen See und mit dem hohen Minarett und den goldenen Kuppeln ist sie wirklich ein eindrückliches Bauwerk. Die Pfahlbauer Siedlungen von Kampung Ayer ist das pure Gegenteil und bietet den Bewohnern alles andere als Wohngelegenheiten eines reichen Landes. Viele Häuser sind am Verfallen oder schon ganz verlassen und haufenweise Abfall schwimmt auf dem Wasser. Hölzerne Stege und Brücken verbinden die verschiedenen Nachbarschaften. Brunei ist ein weiteres Beispiel für die ungerechte Verteilung der Reichtümer eines Landes, wo nur einige Privilegierte profitieren. |

The Sultanat of Brunei (or Brunei Darussalam, how it is officially called) is one of the smallest countries in Asia and in the world yet oil and natural gas has made it one of the richest. The nation is governed by a Sultan from the miniature capital of Bandar Seri Begawan. There is not a whole lot to do and see here. Being a Muslim country besides the Sultan’s Palace the mosques are the most outstanding buildings. The shiny white Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque has its own artificial lake and with its tall minaret and golden domes it is indeed an impressive sight. But just a few meters away Brunei shows a completely different face. The traditional stilt villages of Kampung Ayer have anything else than houses for citizens of a rich country. Many houses are dilapidated or totally abandoned with lots of garbage floating all around. Makeshift plank ways and bridges connect the different neighborhoods. Brunei is just another example of a country where a few privileged ones profit from this unequal distribution of the riches. |
