Temples of Angkor Wat (UNESCO world heritage site)

Angkor, this spectacular city of temples was the heart and soul of the formerly vast Khmer empire between the 9th and 13th century. (Not to be confused with the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in more recent history!) Literally hundreds of temples are scattered in the area. Siem Reap is the closest city with plenty of hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues to assure a memorable visit. In Siem Reap you can easily organize a tour to the site or hire one of the tuk-tuk drivers to show you around as I did.

Angkor Wat is one of the world’s largest religious structures, protected by a several meters wide moat. A causeway leads to the central complex with its series of extraordinary bas-reliefs.

While many parts of Angkor have been well-preserved and the jungle has been cleared away, the temples of Ta Prohm seem to be eaten alive by the jungle vegetation. Trees, roots and vines entangle the walls and columns of the structures and give it a somehow creepy look. And exactly that’s why wandering around this area is especially rewarding.

The area of Angkor Thom is accessible through five monumental gates. The most outstanding temple here is Bayon where over 200 stone faces stare down at you and accompany your every step.

Royal Palace - Phnom Penh

The Royal Palace is the architectonic marvel of Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh. It actually consists of many finely decorated ceremonial and religious buildings, including the extravagant Silver Pagoda, all located in a lush park. Even today the palace is used for official events and some sections might be closed to the public.

Beaches in Cambodia: Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is a pleasant resort town on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand. Victory Beach, Independence Beach, Serendipity Beach are all attractive beaches. But if you can do with just basic accommodation head to the more secluded and tranquil Occheuteal Beach and Otres Beach for the ultimate relaxation experience. Another plus about travelling to Sihanoukville is the delicious sea food prepared by many family businesses along the coast.
