Asia: Malaysia Travel Photography

Photographic impressions of my travels through the fascinating Southeast Asian country of Malaysia. The trip started on the small, tropical island of Langkawi, in the very north of Malaysia. A ferry brought me to the much bigger island of Penang and its capital Georgetown with an interesting mix of Islamic mosques, Buddhist temples and Christian churches. Next on the itinerary was...

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands, a picturesque area full of tea plantations, strawberry farms, bee keepers, cabbage fields, rose gardens and a network of easy jungle trails.

Taman Negara National Park

The canopy walkway in Taman Negara National Park is a major attraction. Although with too many visitors balancing along the wooden planks it is very unlikely that you see anything more exciting than tree tops, branches and leaves. Yet at an altitude of 45m above ground the adrenaline still moves wildly and it’s definitely good fun. Several jungle trails are well signposted and you can easily explore the national park on your own unless you prefer to join a tour group. Right next to the canopy walkway a path leads up to Bukit Teresik, a tall hill infested with busy ant tribes and fine views across the forest. Another trek I liked was to the cave of Gua Telinga where you can crawl into a narrow river cave, as long as you don’t mind the many bats speeding by your head. Unforgettable was the encounter with two wild boars that scared the hell out of me. But they were equally frightened and run off quickly. Mosquitoes and leeches can be a nuisance, so be prepared.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia. Its most famous landmark are the Petronas Twin Towers which were the tallest buildings in the world until 2004 when Taipei 101 in Taiwan took over the record.

Melaka / Malacca

Melaka is a worthwhile place to visit. It is a former colony of the Portuguese, Dutch and the British and still today some historic buildings can be seen and visited.

Borneo: Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu in the state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo is the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia at 4095 m above sea level. The peak can be climbed in only two days but I enjoyed spending an extra day in Kinabalu National Park to explore the different trails and the astonishing variety of flora and fauna.

Borneo: Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center

The aim of the Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary is to rehabilitate orphan orang utans. The apes can roam freely around the protected forest but they might show up at the feeding platform where visitors can catch a glimpse of these impressive animals. Besides orang utans you might also spot some macaques showing off their acrobatic skills.

Borneo: Niah National Park

Niah National Park is famous for its great cave and it’s relatively easy to see animals such as bats, butterflies, snakes, frogs, lizards and other reptiles.

Borneo: Kuching

Around Sarawak’s capital Kuching there are several interesting national parks. In addition there is a cultural village and a pleasant beach nearby.

Borneo: Bako National Park

I was lucky enough to see abundant wildlife in Bako National Park: Proboscis and other monkeys, a family of wild boars, a scorpion, different types of lizards and plenty of birds.
