The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) crosses the River Reuss in the heart of the city of Lucerne in central Switzerland

Due to its lovely location on the shore of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), within sight of Mount Pilatus and the Swiss Alps, Lucerne has long been a very popular tourist destination. The picturesque Old Town centre certainly merits a leisurely stroll to discover the many historic buildings with painted facades and have a look at the Lion Monument in a small park just off Löwenplatz, a natural rock carving depicting a dying lion. And be sure to walk along the covered Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), one of Lucerne’s most famous landmarks, with its octagonal Water Tower and have a look at the series of historic paintings showing events of the long history of Lucerne.

The rugged contours of Mount Piloatus overlook Lucerne from the south. A popular route from Lucerne is to take the boat, sometimes even a lake-steamer to Alpnachstad. From there with the world's steepest cogwheel railway up to Mount Pilatus on (2'120 m). On the other side of the mountain down with the cable car back to Lucerne.

You could spend several days exploring the Lake Lucerne with ists scenic mountains and typical Swiss villages along its twisting coastline. Old-fashioned paddlesteamers operate several times a day, more frequently in summer. If you're not sure which trip to take, just combine the boat trip with the ascent of Mount Pilatus.
